Congratulations to Zayn al-Din on the joy whereby

the forenoon sun was unveiled before the full moon.

Through it the celestial spheres shone, even their ether,

with the radiant brow of a full moon that appeared on the Night of Decree.

And the loved ones rejoiced in it when there came toward them

food, roasted or cooked in the pot.

And the choicest portions of genuine sweetmeats adorned

the breasts of people in the world, but not my own.

    وَذا شيمَةٌ مِنكُم عَرَفتُ بِها قَدري

    And they were favored with them instead of me, and I was neglected by them;

and this is a trait of yours, through which I learned my standing.

Their letters are root letters, while my letter is superfluous,

as though I were a wāw appended to the end of ʿAmr.

Yet I am that close friend who has become

of service to literature, innocent of treachery.
