بروحيwith my soul as ransom حَبيبٌa beloved نَعَّمَgladdened اللَهُGod بالَهhis state of mind
وَلاand not زالَceased فيin أَمنٍsafety مَدىthroughout الدَهرِall time جَذلاناjoyful
My soul be ransom for a beloved—may God grant him ease,
and may he remain safe and joyful for all time.
تملَّكنيhe possessed me مِنهُfrom him بِسحرِwith the magic of جُفُونِهِhis eyelids
فَصِرتُso I became أخيذاًa captive لاnot أَرىI see عَنهُaway from him سُلواناconsolation; forgetfulness
He took possession of me with the magic of his eyelids,
and I became a captive, finding no way to forget him.
غزالٌa gazelle لَهُfor him مَرعىًpasture خَصيبٌlush بِمُهجتيin my heart’s blood
وَسَلسالُand the clear stream of دَمعيmy tears يَغتَديhe sets out at dawn مِنهُfrom it رَيّاناhis thirst quenched
A gazelle with lush pasture in my heart’s blood,
and from the clear stream of my tears he sets out at dawn, his thirst quenched.
وَلماand when رَآنيhe saw me ذُبتُI melted مِنهُbecause of him صَبابَةًin ardent longing
وَذُقتُand I tasted مَراراتِthe bitter pains of المَحبةِlove أَلواناin many forms
And when he saw that I had melted with longing for him
and had tasted love’s bitterness in many forms,
تَعجَّبَhe marveled منat صَبريmy patience عَلىin bearing مُرِّthe bitterness of هَجرِهِhis abandonment
فَأَهدىso he gave ليَto me الحلواءَsweets لُطفاًout of kindness وَإِحساناand generosity
he marveled at my patience with his bitter abandonment,
so he gave me sweets in kindness and generosity.
توهَّمَhe imagined أَنthat أَشفىI would be cured بِهاby them فَإِذاbut behold بِهاthrough them
يَزيدُhe increases ضنىًwasting illness جسميmy body وَقَلبيand my heart نِيراناflames
He imagined I would be cured by them, but instead, through them,
he increases my body’s wasting and my heart’s flames.
وَأَيُّand what شفاءٍcure لاnot يُرىis seen شفَّهُhas worn him away الهَوىpassion
سِنينَyears لَهُfor him تِسعاًnine يُكابِرhe struggles against أَشجاناsorrows
And what cure? None is seen—passion has worn him away
for nine years, while he struggles against sorrows.
أَياO مَهديَgiver of الحَلواءِsweets فيin فيكَyour mouth شبهُهاtheir likeness
بَلrather احلىsweeter بِهِwith it لَوif شِئتَyou wished أَرويتَyou would quench ظَمآناa thirsty person
O giver of sweets, their like is in your mouth,
nay, sweeter; with it, if you wished, you could quench a thirsty man.
وَياand O مالِكاًmaster of رِقّيmy bondage أَماis there not لَكَfor you رِقَّةtenderness
عَلىtoward عاشقٍa lover يَهواكwho loves you سِراًsecretly وَإِعلاناand openly
And O master of my bondage, have you no tenderness
toward a lover who loves you secretly and openly?
وَكُنتُand I used to أَرىthink أَنَّthat التَهاجُرَmutual estrangement يَنقَضيcomes to an end
إِذاwhen الحسنُbeauty يَكسوclothes وَردَthe roses of خَدَّيكَyour two cheeks رَيحاناbasil
And I used to think our estrangement would end
when beauty clothed the roses of your cheeks in basil.
وَقَدand indeed زِدتَyou have grown فيin تِيهٍhaughtiness وَعُجبٍand self-admiration وَنَخوَةٍand pride
أَخاًa brother لَكَfor you ماnot الفردوسParadise خاتلتbeguiled رِضواناRidwan
Yet you have grown in haughtiness, self-admiration, and pride.
Paradise has not beguiled Ridwan to send you a brother.
فَجئتَso you came إِلىinto الدُنياthe world فَريداًpeerless فَلاso not تَرىyou see
بِهاin it عاشِقاًa lover إِلاexcept بِحُبِّكَwith love for you مَلآناbrimming
So you came into the world peerless, and you see no
lover in it but one brimming with love for you.
