ماwhat لِليَراعَةِwith the reed pen لاmay not رِيعَتbe frightened بِحادِثَةٍby a calamity
استَعجَمَتhas grown mute وَلِحِبريand with my ink الآنَnow قَدindeed جَمُساhas congealed
What ails the reed pen (may no calamity frighten it)?
It has grown mute; and what of my ink, now congealed?
وَلِلقَوافيand with the rhymes قَفَتhave followed ماليmy wealth فَلاso no أَدبٌliterary work
يُملىis dictated وَلاnor نَشَبٌwealth يُريحrelieves مُبتَئِساa distressed person
And the rhymes, gone the way of my wealth? So no literary work
is dictated, nor is there wealth to comfort a distressed soul.
فَصفحةِso the page الطِّرسِof parchment مِنof دَرّيmy pearls مُعَطَّلَةٌis bereft
وَرَسمُand the trace جُوديَof my generosity إِذsince قَلَّلتُI gave less قَدindeed دَرَساhas faded
So the parchment's page is bereft of my pearls,
and the trace of my generosity has faded since I gave less.
وَقَدand indeed ذَوتhave withered زَهَراتُthe blossoms الشِعرof poetry واalas أَسَفاmy sorrow
لَمّاwhen غَداbecame ماءُthe water فكريof my thought غائِراًsunken يَبَساdry
And the blossoms of poetry have withered—alas!—
when the water of my thought sank away and dried up.
كَأَنَّنيas though I لَمdid not أُعَمِّرenliven مُنتَدىa gathering أَدبٍof literature
وَلَمand did not أَجُلset racing لِلصِباfor youth فيin حَلبَةan arena فَرَساa horse
As though I had never enlivened a literary gathering,
nor raced a horse in the arena of youth.
سَدَدتُI barred بابَthe door القِراof hospitality عَنagainst كُلِّevery مُلتمِسseeker
إِنif كُنتُI were أَسكُنُI dwell بَعدَbeyond العامِthis year أَندَلُساal-Andalus
I shall bar hospitality's door against every seeker
if I remain in al-Andalus beyond this year.

And many a wrathful man has cauldrons boiling
with fire, and kindles a firebrand for us from his mouth.

He saw my eminence and the honor I had been granted,
so he sought to violate a sanctuary always guarded—
حِمىًa sanctuary حماهُhe guarded it حَمِيُّproud الأَنفِthe nose (honor) ذوpossessing كَرَمٍgenerosity

a sanctuary guarded by a fiercely proud, generous man,
like a raincloud pouring down, or a lion seizing prey.

Eloquent: when he summons noble speech, there comes
its finest expression, hastening toward him with ease.
فَمِنso some are قَلائدnecklaces يَعلُوsurmounts الدُرُّpearls جَوهَرَهاtheir gems

So some are necklaces, pearls crowning their gems;
and some are peerless jewels whose light dispels predawn darkness.
أَعجِبmarvel! بِهِat him مِنas خَطيبٍan orator ماهِرٍskillful نَدسٍdiscerning
إِنif قِستَyou compare قَساًQuss بِهِwith him تَخالُهُyou would deem him وَدَساa worthless fellow
How marvelous an orator he is—skillful and discerning!
If you compare Quss with him, you would think Quss a worthless fellow.

Rather, the marvel is my dwelling between a spiteful man
and an envier who speaks of nothing but people's honor.
قَومٌpeople إِذاwhen غِبتُI am absent قالواthey say ماwhat يليقُbefits بِهمfor them
وَإِنand if حَضَرتُI am present تَراهُمyou see them خُشَّعاhumbled نُكُساheads bowed
People who, when I am absent, say what befits them,
and when I am present, you see them humbled, heads bowed.

My fault in their eyes is my keen insight when they are suddenly beset
by famines that bewilder even a keen-witted young man.
وَإِنَّنيand indeed I مثلُlike ماءِwater المُزنِof rainclouds لاno رَنَقٌmurkiness

And I am like the water of rainclouds, free of murk;
likewise my mantle is pure: it has never known a stain.

What harm would it have done them to treat fairly a man
who never slept at night harboring foul speech, nor even conceived it?
أَماdid they not? دَرَواthey know أَنَّنيthat I لَوif شِئتُI wished أَفضَحُهُمI would expose them

Do they not know that, if I wished, I could expose them
with eloquent verses, though you see them mute?

Each a far-roaming virgin with budding breasts,
whose presentation to them would be her wedding;

and every cleaving, back-shattering verse
that turns a once-joyful man into an ally of sorrow.

But I was deterred from them because they are filth,
and my tongue has refused to mention filth.
