1. وَما اسمٌ خُماسيٌّ إِذا ما فَكَكتَه

    يَصيرُ لَنا فِعلينِ أَمراً وَماضيا

And what five-letter name, when you take it apart,

Becomes for us two verbs—an imperative and a past-tense verb—

  2. بِعَكس وَهوَ كُلّ وَجزء جَمعه

    بإبدالِ عَين حازَ فيهِ التَناهيا

By reversal? It is a whole and a part; its plural,

With an ʿayn substituted, has attained the utmost limit therein.

  3. وَمَع كَونِهِ فَرداً وَجَمعاً فَأولٌ

    وَآخرهُ أَضحى لشخص مُعادِيا

And though it is both singular and plural, its beginning

And its end have become hostile to someone.

  4. وَفي عَكسِهِ صَوتٌ فَتبنيه صيغةً

    وَتَبني بِمَعناه وَما أَنتَ بانيا

And in its reverse is a sound, so you fashion it into a word-form,

And you build with its meaning, though you are no builder.

  5. فَكَم فيهِ مِن مَعنى خفي وَإِنَّما

    عنيت بذكري لِلّذي لَيسَ خافيا

So many hidden meanings lie within it! Yet I only

Meant, in my mention, what is not hidden.
