أَتَرى قُماشي غائباً في الصِينِ

أَتَرى قُماشي غائباً في الصِينِ

فَأُقيمُ أَطلُبُهُ لِعَشرِ سِنينِ

فَأُقيمُ أَطلُبُهُ لِعَشرِ سِنينِ

Do you think my cloth is away in China,

Do you see my shirt absent in China

that I should keep seeking it for ten years?

So I stand seeking it for ten years

إِنَّ امرَأً يكِلُ الأُمورَ لِغَيرِهِ

إِنَّ امرَأً يكِلُ الأُمورَ لِغَيرِهِ

هُوَ أَنوَكٌ بَل مُطبِقٌ بِجُنونِ

هُوَ أَنوَكٌ بَل مُطبِقٌ بِجُنونِ

Indeed, a man who entrusts his affairs to another

A man who leaves matters to others

is a fool—nay, utterly mad.

Is helpless, rather sealed in madness

إِن مُبتَغٍ برَّ الأَنام بِأَسرِهم

إِن مُبتَغٍ برَّ الأَنام بِأَسرِهم

لَكَمَن يُرَجّي النَشعَ مِن تِنِّينِ

لَكَمَن يُرَجّي النَشعَ مِن تِنِّينِ

Indeed, one who seeks kindness from all mankind

If one seeks the righteousness of all people

is like one hoping for nourishment from a dragon.

It is like hoping for warmth from a dragon

أَلفُ الدراهمِ لَم أَصِل مِنها لما

أَلفُ الدراهمِ لَم أَصِل مِنها لما

أَبغيهِ مِن أَلفٍ سِوى التسعينِ

أَبغيهِ مِن أَلفٍ سِوى التسعينِ

Of the thousand dirhams, I received nothing of what

I gained a thousand coins but could not attain

I seek from a thousand, save ninety.

What I seek from less than ninety

مِن بَعدِ أَربَعَةِ الشُهورِ أَتَت لي الت

تِسعونَ صَفقةَ خاسِرٍ مَغبونِ
