سَكِرتُI became drunk وَلَكنand yet مِنكَfrom you بِالمقلةِthrough the eye النَشوىdrunken
فَقَلبيso my heart لاnot يَختارُchooses عَنinstead of سُكرِهِits drunkenness صَحواsobriety
I grew drunk—but on your drunken eye;
so my heart chooses no sobriety over its drunkenness.
وَلذَّand grew sweet ليَto me الوَجدُpassionate longing المُبَرِّحُagonizing فيfor الَّتيthe woman who
أَمرَّgrew bitter بِهاbecause of her عَيشيmy life وَقَدand indeed كانَhad been ليto me حُلواsweet
And agonizing longing grew sweet to me for the woman
through whom my life turned bitter, though it had been sweet to me.
وَقَدand indeed مَلأَتshe has filled كُلّيall of me بِبَعضِwith part of جَمالِهاher beauty
فَماso there is no لِسواهاfor anyone other than her فيَّin me مِنany مَوضِعٍplace خُلواempty
She has filled my whole being with just part of her beauty,
so no place in me lies empty for anyone other than her.
وَعُلِّقتُهاand I fell in love with her سَمراءَbrown-skinned أَمّاas for قَوامُهاher stature
فَللسُمرِso, to the tawny spears وَالأَلحاظِand the glances للشادِنِto the young gazelle الأَحوىdusky
And I fell in love with her, brown-skinned; as for her stature,
it is like tawny spears, and her glances like a dusky young gazelle's.
تَفوقُshe surpasses سَنىًin radiance شَمسَthe sun of الضُحىthe morning وَهِلالهاand its crescent
وَلِمand why لاnot وَلمand has not تَخشَfeared كُسوفاًan eclipse وَلاnor محواeffacement
She outshines the morning sun and its crescent moon,
and why not, when she has never feared eclipse or fading?
تُغازِلُنيflirt with me مِنهاof hers جُفونٌeyelids نَواعِسٌdrowsy
يُؤثّرنَthey cause فيin أَجفانِيَmy eyelids السُهدsleeplessness وَالشَجواand sorrow
Her drowsy eyelids flirt with me;
they mark my eyelids with sleeplessness and sorrow.
عَجِبتُI marveled لَهاat her إِذwhen نَلتَقيwe meet لاno تَكَلُّمٌspeech
يَكونُoccurs وَتَدريand she knows ماwhat يرادُis intended مِنfrom الفَحوىthe implied meaning
I marvel at her: when we meet, no speech
is exchanged, yet she knows what is meant by implication.
وَتُعرِبُand she expresses عَماabout what قَدalready أَكَنَّتhave concealed نُفوسُناour souls
بِلَحنٍthrough allusion وَلَمand has not تَقرَأread كِتاباًa book وَلاnor نَحواgrammar
And she expresses what our souls have concealed
through allusion, though she has read neither a book nor grammar.

You see the beloved's eye reading passages
of love revealed upon the face of one who loves.

فَياso, oh لُطفَthe delicacy of مَعنىًa meaning انتجتbrought forth تِلكُمthat النَجوىthe whispered exchange
My inner self confides its intent to hers;
and oh, how delicate the meaning that whispered exchange brought forth!
وَأَشكوand I complain لَهاto her وَجداًpassionate longing قَديماًold حَديثُهُits tale
فَتُصغِيso she listens وَلَكنand yet لاnot تُزيلُshe dispels لَناfor us الشَكوىthe complaint
And I complain to her of a longing whose tale is old;
so she listens, yet leaves our complaint unrelieved.

Of the Turks, she never grazed in the environs of Hajir
or Radwa, nor grazed in Najd or Huzwa.

Yet her sword-belt is traced to Khaqan,
and in Egypt she was raised, and there she has her home.
أَلَخصاءَO full-lidded one طَرفٍeye هَلis there لِقَلبيfor my heart مخلَصٌa way of escape

O full-lidded one, can my heart find a way of escape
to a cheek that has become our Garden of Refuge?

it was granted us, as we gathered there all we desired,

and sipped wine from those front teeth,
and kissed dark, dusky lips among the tender fruit.
