ماwhat لِدَمعيwith my tears ساجِماًstreaming كَالغَمامlike rain clouds
وَلجسميand with my body ناحِلاًwasted بالسقامby sickness
What ails my tears, streaming like rain clouds,
My tears flow like clouds,
And my body, wasted by sickness?
My body wastes away in sickness.
صابَنيstruck me مِنfrom شادِنٍa young gazelle سَهمan arrow لَحظٍa glance
فَفُؤاديso my heart دائمُunceasing القَرحِthe wound دامbleeding
From a young gazelle, a glance’s arrow struck me,
An arrow's glance from a fawn struck me,
So my heart is ever wounded, bleeding.
So my heart bleeds ceaselessly.
وَصَديقيand my friend لائِميreproaching me فيfor هَواهُlove for him
لَستُI am not فيهِover it سامِعاًlistening للملامto reproach
And my friend reproaches me for loving him;
My friend blames me for my love,
I heed no reproach over it.
But I do not heed his reproach.
قالَhe said مَوتٌdeath عاجِلٌswift لِمُحِبٍّfor a lover
قُلتُI said إِنّيindeed I راغِبٌdesirous فيof الحِمامdeath
He said, “Swift death awaits a lover.”
Death said: soon for the lover!
I said, “Indeed, I long for death.”
I said: I long for the bathroom.
قُلتُI said ياO صاحِfriend الهَوىlove مُستلذٌdelightful
لذَّtake delight فيهِin it مَعwith غرامlove’s torment
I said, “Friend, love is sweet;
I said: Oh companion of passion sweetly enjoyed
Take delight in it, even with love’s torment.”
Is the passion with lovesickness.
غَرَّbeguiled حِلميmy judgment ناهِدٌa full-breasted maiden ذاتُpossessing وَجهٍa face
قَمريٍّmoonlike غَرَّbeguiled بَدرَthe full moon التَمامfullness
A full-breasted maiden beguiled my judgment; her face
My reason was tempted by a moon-faced beauty,
Was moonlike, and beguiled the moon at its fullest.
A full moon that outshone completeness.
وَسَبانيand took me captive فاتنٌa charmer فاتِكٌdeadly بِيto me
ساحِرٌbewitching ليto me ساخِرٌmocking بِالأَنامat humankind
And a charmer took me captive, deadly to me,
I was entranced by a charming and lovely one,
Bewitching me, mocking humankind.
A sorceress who enchants people.
وَرَمانيand shot at me ذابلُlanguid اللحظِin gaze ساجٍserene
مَعdespite سَطاهُhis might خائِفٌafraid كُلّevery رامِarcher
And one with a languid gaze shot at me, serene,
I was struck by one with fading glances,
Yet for all his might, afraid of every archer.
Fearful despite his boldness and determination.
