O separation, you have given me sorrow in place of joy,
O separation, you have replaced my joy with sorrow,

And kept awake an eye that had so often slumbered.

How can I be united when I am divided—
How can there be reunion between what is sundered—
A body in Egypt, and a soul settled in al-Andalus?
A body in Egypt and a soul that has settled in al-Andalus?
