بَينَbetween القَصرَينِthe two palaces بَداappeared قَمَرُa moon
بِمَحاسِنِهِby his charms فُتنَwas bewitched البَشَرُhumankind
Between the two palaces a moon appeared;
Between the two palaces the moon appeared
His charms bewitched humankind.
Dazzling people with its beauty
يُعزىhe is ascribed للتُركِto the Turks وَقَدand indeed تَرَكَتhave left
عَيناهُhis two eyes فُؤاديَmy heart يَستَعِرُburning fiercely
He is said to be of the Turks, and
It is attributed to the Turks, and has left
His eyes have left my heart ablaze.
My heart stirred by its eyes
عَيناtwo eyes of رَشأٍa fawn قَدindeed زانَهُماadorned them both
غَنَجٌcoquettish charm يَسبيكَcaptivates you أَوor الحَوَرُthe eyes' black-and-white contrast
A fawn's eyes, graced
Eyes of a fawn that were adorned
By coyness that captivates you, or their vivid black-and-white contrast.
With kohl that captivates or houris
يَمشِيhe walks فَتَلِينُso they grow supple مَعاطِفُهُhis flanks
وَلَهand he has قَلبa heart قاسٍحَجَرُhard as stone
He walks, and his flanks grow supple,
He walks with robes flowing
Yet his heart is hard as stone.
Yet has a heart of unfeeling stone
نَظَرَتbeheld عَينايَmy two eyes مَحاسِنَهُhis charms
وَالحُبُّand love يُهَيِّجُهُstirs it النَظَرُgazing
My eyes beheld his charms,
My eyes beheld his beauty
And gazing stirs love.
And love stirred by the sight
فَسرَتso it flowed لِلقَلبِto the heart مَحَبَّتُهُlove for him
وَالقَلبُand the heart وَساطَتُهُits intermediary البَصَرُsight
So love for him flowed into my heart,
So his love crept into my heart
And sight is the heart's intermediary.
With the heart its advocate being sight
قَلبيmy heart وَالطَرفُand the eye قَدindeed اِشتَرَكاhave become partners
فَلِذاso for this one فِكرٌthought وَلِذاand for this one سَهَرُsleeplessness
My heart and eye have become partners:
My heart and glance both took part
So thought falls to one, and sleeplessness to the other.
So for this thought and for that wakefulness
أَأَميرَO prince الحُسنِof beauty وَهَلand is there أَحدٌanyone
إِلّاexcept لِجمالِكَto your beauty يَأَتَمِرُobeys commands
O prince of beauty, is there anyone
O prince of beauty, does anyone else
Who does not obey your beauty's command?
Bow to your beauty except as subjects?
أَتُرىdo you suppose تَدرِيyou know أَنّيthat I am كَلَفٌlovesick
مِنfrom حُبِّكَlove for you ماno ليfor me مُصطَبَرُendurance
Do you know, I wonder, that I am lovesick,
Do you know that I suffer
From loving you, with no patience left?
From love of you, having no patience?
وَعَنand as for السُلوانِforgetfulness سَلَوتُI have forgotten فَهَلso will
تَرثيyou pity لِمُحِبِّكَfor your lover ياO قَمَرُmoon
And I have forgotten how to forget; so will
Yet about solace I asked, so will
You pity your lover, O moon?
You mourn for your lover, O moon?
