Some people marveled at my passion and my yearning

for two gazelles, though the custom is to love a single fawn.

And they said, rightly: a young man does not have two hearts,

nor can two swords—woe to you!—share one scabbard.

Yet they did not know love’s secret and its many forms,

and indeed the lovesick heart has ample room for affection.

Delicate forms of beauty appear to us,

so it grows attached to what is fitting and well-proportioned among them.
