رَمانيshot me الرَشاthe young gazelle بِسَهمٍwith an arrow
مُصيبٍstriking the mark بِهِwith it فُؤاديmy heart
The young gazelle shot me with an arrow,
The young gazelle shot me with an arrow,
and with it struck my heart—
striking my heart with it—
بِطَرفٍwith a gaze نَدٍdewy وَفيهِand in it
سِناتٌdrowsy spells نَفَتbanished رُقاديmy sleep
from a dewy glance in which
with a dewy gaze, in which
drowsy languors banished my sleep.
drowsy spells banished my sleep.
فَجَفنيso my eyelid إِلىtoward سُهادٍsleeplessness
وَجَنبيand my side عَلىupon قَتادِthornbushes
Thus my eyelid is condemned to sleeplessness,
So my eyelid is given to sleeplessness,
and my side to the thorns of qatād.
and my side rests on thornbushes.
وَدَمعيand my tears جَرىflowed كَسَيلٍlike a torrent
أَتِيٍّcoming from afar يَجيcomes بِوادِيthrough my valley
My tears stream like a torrent
And my tears flowed like a torrent,
that comes coursing through a valley.
coming from afar through my valley.
وَقَلبٌand a heart حُشيwas filled بِجَمرٍwith embers
كَقَدحٍlike striking fire مِنfrom الزِنادِthe firesticks
My heart is packed with embers,
And a heart was filled with embers,
like a spark struck from firesteel.
like fire struck from firesticks.
فَصَبريso my patience لَدَىin اِنتِقاصٍdecline
وَحُبّيand my love إِلىtoward اِزدِيادِincrease
My patience is ever waning,
So my patience is in decline,
while my love is ever growing.
and my love keeps increasing.
فَأَنّىso how يَرىhe sees سُلُوّاًsolace from love
لِصَبٍّfor a lovesick lover ضَناهُhis wasting بادِis apparent
How, then, can solace come
How, then, can there be solace
to a lovesick man whose wasting is plain?
for a lover whose wasting is plain?
شِفاءُthe cure الضَنىfor wasting شِفاءٌShifā’
تَحلىshe sweetens جَنىthe harvest الشَهادِof honeycombs
The cure for love’s wasting is lips,
The cure for wasting is Shifā’,
sweet with honey’s gathered nectar.
who sweetens the harvest of honeycombs.

يَنَلhe attains غايَةَthe utmost goal المُرادِof desire
Whenever he sips their fruit,
Whenever he sips her harvest,
he reaches the summit of desire,
he attains the goal of his desire,
وَيَحياand he lives بِخَيرِin the best عَيشٍlife
وَيَأمَنand he is safe مِنfrom الأَعاديthe enemies
lives a goodly life,
and lives the best of lives,
and rests safe from his enemies.
and is safe from his foes.
