ماhow أَحسَنَbeautiful ماthe way يَقراhe reads حَبيبيَmy beloved شِعريmy verse
فيهِabout him غَزلاًlove poetry وَسامِعwhile a listener لاnot يَدريknows
How beautifully my beloved reads my verse—
love poetry about him, while a listener is unaware!
يَدريknows قَمَريmy moon بِأَنَّthat فيهِin it دُرَراًpearls
لاقىhe found دُرَراًpearls مُستخرجاextracted مِنfrom بَحرِa sea
My moon knows that it contains pearls;
he found pearls extracted from a sea.
بَحرٌa sea مَدَدٌreplenishment لَهُfor it ذَكاءٌintelligence خُلِقاwas created
حَتّىuntil لَحَسِبتُI surely thought فِكرَهُhis thought مِنof جَمرِembers
A sea replenished by an intelligence created for it,
till I truly thought his mind was made of embers.
لِلخَدof the cheek فَأخالُso I imagine جَمرهُhis embers لاnot يَسرِيspread
Blazing embers coursed through veils
of the cheek; I imagine his embers do not spread.
يَسرِيit spreads لِشَجٍto a grieving man فُؤادُهُhis heart فيin حَرقٍburning anguish
قَدhas indeed ذابَmelted أَسىًwith sorrow مِنbecause of ساكِنٍone dwelling فيin القَصرِthe palace
They spread to a grieving man whose heart is ablaze,
melted with sorrow for one dwelling in the palace.
قَصرٌa palace لِرَشاًfor a young gazelle كَأَنَّماas though طَلعتُهُhis countenance
مِنfrom شَمسِthe sun ضُحىًmidmorning أَوor وجهُهُhis face مِنfrom بَدرِa full moon
A palace for a young gazelle, whose countenance seems
made of the midmorning sun, or his face of a full moon.
بَدرٌa full moon وَعَلَتهُand overhung him ظُلَّةٌa canopy مِنof شَعَرٍhair
يَهتَزُّsways نَقاًa sand dune مِنfrom تَحتِbeneath غُصنٍa bough نَضرِverdant
A full moon, overhung by a canopy of hair;
a sand dune sways beneath a verdant bough.
نَضرٌverdant وَشَكاand he complained مِنof رِدفِهِhis rump مِنof ثِقَلٍheaviness
فيهِwithin it وَكَأَنَّand as though رِدفَهُhis rump مِنof صَخرِrock
Verdant, he complained of his rump, of the heaviness
within it; and his rump seems made of rock.
صَخرٌrock كَفُؤادِlike the heart of مَنthe one هَويناwe loved شَغَفاًwith consuming passion
فَيهِfor him فَلَقَدfor indeed أَودىperished بِهِbecause of him ليfor me صَبرِيmy patience
Rock, like the heart of the one we loved with passion
for him; because of him, my patience has indeed perished.
صَبرٌpatience صَبرٌbitter aloes مَتىwhenever يُجَرَّعare forced down صَبرٌbitter aloes
جِسماًa body دَنِفاًwasted by illness فَحيَّهلthen hasten! لِلقَبرِto the grave
Patience is bitter aloes; whenever aloes are forced down
a wasted body, then onward to the grave!
