For a loss like this, the founts of tears run dry,

and crushing, heart-rending sorrows are amassed.

The fruits of despair are gathered from death's great tree,

and ribs bend over enduring grief.

A calamity has struck us, like no other calamity:

parting without return, and remembrance ever recurring.

And dwellings stand deserted, once alive with learning

and remembrance and the Quran—now barren wastes.

    فَكامِلُهُ فَيضٌ عَلى الخَلقِ شائِعُ

    We were bereaved: were reason embodied, it would be she;

for its fullness is an outpouring spread throughout creation.

Only one keen of mind and possessed of wisdom was seen,

patient in affliction, humbly submissive to God.

A young woman who became the sun's sister, yet was not [seen],

because of a seclusion that nature required.

Living in luxury, waited upon, with attendants gathered round her,

and everyone, without fail, obedient whenever she commanded.

Beauty fluttered over her, dewy with freshness,

like a flourishing bough, dew-drenched in a leafy grove.

Keeping to her curtained chamber, she recited her Quran,

with an understanding heart, her eyes streaming with tears.

And her radiance shone through gaps in her chamber's curtains,

as the full moon's light appears, shining brightly.

She had known no misery and never lacked wealth,

nor had any terror of fate ever frightened her.

At times she played with pure gold, at other times

with fresh pearls no craftsman had pierced.

Never did she put her hand to any task,

except to a pen around which her fingers curled.

With it she copied the Quran and the traditions that

came from God's Messenger, her script exquisite.

She had grown up amid piety and a copy of the Quran,

so remembrance never ceased, nor was faith neglected.

Her concern was not with what women prize:

clothing, adornment, and a lover to lie with.

Indeed, her concern was earning reward to lay by

for the Day of Return, or a book to study.

She studied Quranic commentary and finely expounded grammar,

and reviewed jurisprudence, history, and medicine.

She had resolved to complete the pillars of her faith

through pilgrimage to God's House; the intention is beneficial.

So she made pilgrimage and visited the best who trod the earth:

a noble Prophet, intercessor for the people of the Sanctuary.

And when the All-Merciful decreed His judgment be carried out—

and all that is ordained will surely come to pass—

she met her death in the bloom of youth, a martyr,

not among those who struggle in death's throes.

Rather, with a steady mind, she pronounced the testimony of faith

three times, and passed away while still repeating it.

She did not die until she had seen her resting place

in the world above, as her spirit ascended.

A momentous day marked her death:

women wailed, and gowns were torn.

She had enjoined that none should wail when she died,

but listening ears would not heed that charge.

The notables walked ahead of her at noon,

and prayed over her, supplication following supplication.

They walked before the bier until they brought her

to her dwelling; the grave was most hideous and wide.

When they turned the soil with spades, there appeared to them

earth like wars-dye, a vivid yellow.

The fragrance of musk wafted from its sides,

as though perfume-caravan merchants were unloading there.

O soil, in whose depths Nudar has settled,

may the first rainclouds water you with their downpours.
