My reason? Does nothing please you but my reason?

Perhaps you have broken with your phantom for visiting me.

كأنَّكِ لم تَلْقَيْ سبيلاً إلى العدل
And you who decree estrangement between me and her,
As though you had found no path to justice.

Ah, may my father ransom those sweet ways,
Though they have left me scattered, unreunited.

Though it leaves me preoccupied all day.

Its passes led me to the shelter of level ground.

So it went, until it brought me to a brink:
This was earnestness, not the jesting I had been in.

And from what lay there it mixed a wine for me,
Its taste entices, and its fragrance consoles.

I did not loathe it; rather, it grew impertinent, so I refused it.
Then chastity said, 'Drink, for you are free to do so.'

An impatience came upon me, though I did not doubt your affection,
Seizing the breaths of little letters and messengers.

You marked this age with it; if it loses its way,
That is nothing new in its heedless nature.

Such lordship, save as a disguise of deception and guile.

Listen, without being commanded, to the bitterness of a burning grief:
When my tears surge, its cauldron bubbles and boils.

That hints at one like you feeling shame before one like me?

An excuse is needed, though it is not clear,
But yours is the excellence appointed to judge excellence.

And both my palms have swollen from the rope's marks.

Her words are not my words, nor are her deeds my deeds.

At the outcome of a matter neither bitter nor sweet.

Mercy, mercy! Do not send my Jarwal's ambitions soaring,
Lest we make the folk of Dhuhl's little village suffer through them.

Over me, Hanifa has indeed strayed far from Ijl.

That frightens you on my account, between the mount and the saddle.

Then I have the stronger claim to waywardness and folly.
