بِعَقْلي أما يرضيكِ شيءٌ سِوى عَقْلي
Are you, between estrangement and union, making off
An apparition between estrangement and union
with my reason? Will nothing satisfy you but my reason?
Does nothing please you but my reason?
وَمَانِعَتيand she who denies me حتّىeven علىdespite النأيِdistance وصْلَهاunion with her

لعلَّكِ قد صارَمتِ طَيْفكِ في وصلي
And she who denies me union with her even from afar—
And it has prevented me from even distant union
perhaps you have broken with your phantom for visiting me.
Perhaps you have become severe towards your apparition in my union
وقاضِيةًand she who decrees بالهجرِestrangement بينيbetween me وبينهاand between her

كأنَّكِ لم تَلْقَيْ سبيلاً إلى العدل
And she who decrees estrangement between herself and me—
And a judge with estrangement between me and her
as though you had found no path to justice.
As if you have not found a way to justice

Ah, may my father ransom those sweet ways,
No! By the one whose features are sweet
though they have left me bereft of reunion.
And if she has left me, not gathered together

How excellent that guide would be, impassioned
though it keeps me preoccupied all day.
Even if with him I spend the day busy

And lovely talk: whenever I said it had grown rugged,
The beauty of a conversation whenever I say it saddens
its winding passes led me to a gentle refuge.
Its folds carry me into the bosom of ease

So it went, until it brought me to a brink:
Just so until I looked out onto a shore
this was earnestness, not the jesting I had been engaged in.
Which is serious, not what I was in jest

مذاقَتُهَا تُغْري ونَكْهَتُها تُسْلي
And he mixed me wine from what was there,
And it waved to me from there a cup
its taste enticing, its fragrance consoling.
Whose taste tempts and whose scent comforts

فقالَ العفافُ اشربْ فإنَّك في حِلِّ
I did not loathe it; it grew insolent, so I sent it back.
But I did not grant it, rather I rejected it
Then chastity said, 'Drink; you are free of blame.'
So chastity said “Drink, for you are permitted”

أخوذٌ بأنفاس الرُّسَيْلاتِ والرُّسْل
A fit of vexation came upon me, though I never doubted your affection,
She came to me and I felt no annoyance with your love
snatching the breath of little letters and messengers.
Captivated by the breaths of messages and messengers

You branded this age with it; if it strays,
You characterized this time so if it passes
that is nothing new in its heedless nature.
None but the excellent are safe from its heedlessness

Ah—my father be your ransom—bring forth all your pride,
No! Bring all your pride
and take my abasement: you have left me only abasement.
And leave me humiliated, you left me nothing but my humiliation

O my master—not that I grant to anyone else
My friend, I do not admit to anyone but you
that title, except as a sham of deception and guile.
Anything but the pretense of deceit and trickery

And oh kohl of my eyes, even if sorrow

Has overcome them and the lids are free of kohl

listen—no command intended—to the outpouring of a burning grief:
Leak without being commanded to pass yearning
when my tears surge, its cauldron seethes and boils.
When my tear flows, its flood boiling

تُشِيرُ إلى استْحياءِ مِثْلِكَ من مثلي
You spoke truly: I am the offender. Is there any remnant
You spoke truly, I am the sinner, is there any remaining
that calls for one like you to feel shame before one like me?
Advice that would point to one like you being shy of one like me

There must be an excuse, though it is not plain;
There must be an excuse, though not evident
but yours is the generosity that decides matters of generosity.
But you have the decisive virtue in virtue

Tell me, whom do you treat tenderly? [The final word is unclear.]
I saw you bestow favor upon him and sing his praises
Truly like rain—or am I truly like barren land?
As if to the rain or as if I were the homeland

When he called me and claimed against me, I found
but his judgment, now against me and now for me,
Nothing but his judgement, once against me and once for me

I accepted harm from him as if I were grasping
water, or pursuing a shadow's trace?
At water or seeking the shade

I struggle with her for love's rope while she winds it,
I struggle with her the rope of passion and she twists it
and my two palms have swollen from the rope's marks.
And my palms have become calloused from the rope’s effect

She comes and goes whenever I say she has come close
but her words are not my words, nor her deeds my deeds.
Yet her words are not my words nor her actions my actions

And I was while the one I love and you have reaped
at the outcome of an affair neither bitter nor sweet.
In an affair that does not pass or ripen

By God, I never denied your lead toward the heights,
By God I do not deny you preceded me in high status
but I moved at leisure until I caught up.
But I raced until I caught up to the messengers

Have mercy! Do not send my Jarwal's demands soaring,
Let not your care seek from me an impatient mount's requests
lest we afflict the people of Dhuhl's little village with them.
By which we would trouble the people of the village unjustly

I know no sin against you
save a tenderness that undermines your firm judgment.
Other than a softness that counters your firm wisdom

You will find me, when you say "the land is wide" on foot

You had others you loved besides me and besides him
I will plead no excuses over anything you desire.
And I possess nothing you would love in an addled state

So if you inclined to impulse when you possessed him
against me, Hanifa has indeed strayed far from Ijl.
Over me, Ḥanīfah has swerved from the calf

And if it is the other course, and you are Muhajir,
And if you are the latter and you are an emigrant
why do you not weep in sorrow to al-Fadl?
Why do you not weep with yearning to virtue?

God be with you: let not rage carry you down a path
May God not let anger take you away to distraction
that alarms you on my account, between camel and saddle.
Terrifying you with me between the place of rest and departure

And if you have the better claim to self-restraint and reason,
If you are more worthy of composure and restraint
I have the better claim to waywardness and folly.
I am more worthy of misguidance and ignorance
