    And with my soul I would ransom a young gazelle, whose dwelling is

    An eye streaming tears and a trembling heart.

    لَو رَآهُ هامَ فيهِ يُوسُفُ

    Moonlike in face, radiant in splendor;

    If Yusuf saw him, he would be lost in love with him.

    فَوقَهُ شَمسٌ وَلا تنكَسِفُ

    A bān-tree bough, beneath it a rounded sand dune;

    Above it is a sun that is never eclipsed.

    صُدغُهُ واوٌ وَقدٌّ أَلِفُ

    His eye is a ṣād, and his eyebrow a nūn;

    His sidelock is a wāw, and his stature an alif.

    How strange: the wāw does not bend him toward kindness,

    Though it bends in the middle of his cheek.

    My excuse became plain in cheek-down that settled in

    A rose upon the cheek that cannot be plucked.

    So you see green within red within

    White, guarded by long, thick black lashes.

    If opposites have found harmony in him,

    Then through love they clash against us.

    Who will defend me against an amorous gazelle?

    All my days, I shall not turn from love of him.

    I concealed my love from him for a time,

    Yet he, without doubt, knows of my love.

    O brother of my soul—rather, its master—

    I acknowledge my bondage to you.

    Whenever I asked my heart, apart from you,

    For patience, passion grew within my heart.
