وَلَماand when أَبىrefused إِلاexcept جَفاءًcoldness مُعذِّبيmy tormentor
دَعوتُI prayed لَهُfor him أَنthat يُبتَلىhe be afflicted بِهِيامِwith love's madness
And when my tormentor insisted on nothing but coldness,
I prayed for him to be afflicted with love's madness.
وَكانَand was دُعائيmy prayer اللَهَGod وَقتَat a time of إِجابَةٍanswering
فَهاso, behold هُوَhe ذاthis one فيin لَوعَةٍburning anguish وَغَرامِand consuming passion
And my prayer to God came at an hour when prayers are answered,
so here he is, in burning anguish and consuming passion.
يَذوقُhe tastes مِنof الهِجرانِestrangement ماwhat قَدalready أَذاقَنيhe made me taste
وَيَسقَمُand sickens مِنهُfrom it الجسمُthe body مِثلَlike سَقاميmy sickness
He tastes of estrangement what he once made me taste,
and his body sickens from it, as mine does.
وَكانَand he was بَخيلاًmiserly بِالوِصالِwith union فَحُبُّهُso his beloved
غَداbecame باخِلاًmiserly حَتّىeven بِطَيفِwith an apparition مَنامِsleep
He had been miserly with union; so his beloved
has grown miserly even with a dream-vision.
وَعُلِّقتهُand I fell for him رِيماًa gazelle وَعُلِّقَand he fell for آخَراanother
هَوىhe loved آخَراًanother يَهذِيhe raves بِبَدرِover a full moon تمامِfullness
And I fell for him, a gazelle; he fell for another,
who loved another, who raves over a full moon.
وَعلّقَand he fell for أُخرىanother woman حَبَّهاloved her آخَرٌanother man هَوىhe loved
أُخيرىyet another woman غَدَتshe became تَهذِيshe raves بآخرَover another رامِarcher
And he fell for another woman, loved by another who loved
yet another woman, who began raving over another archer.
فَياso, O لَكَfor you مِنof حُبٍّlove تَسَلسَلَformed a chain كُلُّناall of us
حَليفُa companion of أَسىًsorrow هامِيstreaming المَدامِعِthe tear ducts دامِbleeding
Oh, what a love that has become a chain! Each of us
is sorrow's companion, streaming tears and bleeding.
أَقَمناwe dwelt بِكَهفِin the cave of الحُبِّlove عِدَّةُa number of صُحبَةٍcompanions
وَأَوَّلُناand the first of us بِالبابِat the door شَرُworst مُقامِlodging
We dwelt in love's cave, a band of companions,
and the first of us, at the door, has the worst lodging.
تصَعّدُrise أَنفاسُthe breaths of المُحبينthe lovers فيin الهَوىpassion
إِلَيهِtoward him فَيَبقىso he remains فيin أَليمِagonizing أوامِburning thirst
The lovers' sighs, in their passion, rise
toward him, leaving him in agonizing thirst.
فَياso, oh لَيتَif only أَنّاthat we قَدalready جُمِعناwe were brought together فَنَشتَكيso we might lament
اليمَthe anguish of الهَوىlove أَوor نَشتَفيwe find relief بِكَلامِthrough conversation
Oh, if only we were brought together, so we could lament
love's anguish, or find relief in conversation.
كَفاناwould suffice us وِصالاًas union أَنthat يُكَلِّمَspeak بَعضُناsome of us
لِبَعضٍto others وَلَوeven if كَلماwords برجعِin reply to سَلامِa greeting
It would be union enough for us if some of us spoke
to others—even just words in reply to a greeting.
