وَأَسمرٌand a brown-skinned man قابَلهُfaced him أَسمرُa brown-skinned man
وَأَسمرٌ قابَلهُ أَسمرُ
كِلاهُماboth of them قَلبيmy heart بِهِto him عُلِّقاwas bound
كِلاهُما قَلبي بِهِ عُلِّقا
And one dusky man faced another;
To each of them my heart was bound.
لاحاboth shone هِلالينِtwo crescents وَفاحاand both exhaled fragrance لَناfor us
لاحا هِلالينِ وَفاحا لَنا
مِسكينِtwo musks وَاهتزّاand both swayed قَضيبَيtwo boughs of نَقاa sandhill
مِسكينِ وَاهتزّا قَضيبَي نَقا
They shone like two crescents and wafted fragrance to us,
Like two musks, and swayed like two boughs upon a sandhill.
