And I fell in love with him, a sword between me and him—

a gazelle, yet a slayer of lions.

From among the Turks: as for his beauty, it is bewitching,

and as for his onslaught, it is the deadly assault of mighty lions.

He jealously guards the beauty that is his own,

as though he felt the passion of a constant lover.

Oh, if only I knew the plight of a lover

who cast himself into immense, deadly perils.

There is no union save through an eye's stolen glance,

when he is off guard and unaware.

And if he knew who was gazing

at his beauty, he would repay him by wrenching windpipes.

I shall endure until death comes or he is seen

softening toward a lovesick man, senseless and distraught.

And I consoled my soul that there would come an end

to its passion, and that it would forget as beasts forget.

For all beauty is destined to vanish,

and every cruel oppressor will be afflicted by an oppressor.

Hair will oppress him, settling on his cheek

soon, so he will remain in the blackness of wrongs.
