Celebrate an Eid—you are, beyond doubt, its true Eid;
Rejoice in a festival—you are, without doubt, its celebration.
from you the luminary drew the radiance of its crescent.
And from you, light drew the radiance of its crescent.
بَداappeared وَبداand appeared الوَجهُthe face الَّذيwhich لَكَbelongs to you مُشرِقاًshining
سَناءًwith splendor فَأَبدىand thus revealed نَقصَهُits imperfection بِكَمالِهِthrough its perfection
The crescent appeared—and your face appeared, radiant
The crescent appeared, and your face appeared, shining
with splendor; by your face’s perfection, the crescent revealed its own deficiency.
With splendor, revealing the crescent’s imperfection through its own perfection.
عَليٌّAli هُوَhe الشَمسُthe sun الَّذيwhose فاقَexcelled حُسنُهُhis beauty
وَماand not البَدرُthe full moon إِلاbut مُستَمَدُّderived from جَمالِهِhis beauty
Ali is the sun, whose beauty outshines all;
Ali is the sun whose beauty excels,
the full moon only draws upon his beauty.
And the full moon is but derived from his beauty.
لَئِنif indeed أوحشَتgrew lonely رُوحيmy soul بِبُعدِthrough distance from وِصالِهِunion with him
لَقَدsurely أنِسَتfound comfort عَينيmy eye بِطَيفِin the apparition of خَيالِهِhis image
Though my soul has grown lonely because union with him is distant,
If indeed my soul grew lonely far from union with him,
my eye has indeed found companionship in the phantom of his image.
My eye has surely found comfort in the apparition of his image.
