وَلَماand when أَبىrefused إِلاanything but جَفاءًcoldness مُعذِّبيmy tormentor
دَعوتُI prayed لَهُfor him أَنthat يُبتَلىhe be afflicted بِهِيامِwith love's madness
And when my tormentor insisted on nothing but coldness,
When he insisted on tormenting me cruelly,
I prayed that he be afflicted with love's madness.
I prayed he'd be afflicted with love's agony,
وَكانَand was دُعائيmy prayer اللَهَGod وَقتَat a time of إِجابَةٍanswered prayer
فَهاso behold هُوَhe ذاthis one فيin لَوعَةٍburning anguish وَغَرامِand consuming passion
My prayer to God came at an hour when prayers are answered,
And my prayer was answered instantly by God;
so here he is, in anguish and consuming passion.
Now he's in anguish and passion's gravity,
يَذوقُhe tastes مِنof الهِجرانِestrangement ماwhat قَدalready أَذاقَنيhe made me taste
وَيَسقَمُand grows sick مِنهُfrom it الجسمُthe body مِثلَlike سَقاميmy sickness
He tastes the estrangement he once made me taste,
Tasting from separation what he made me taste,
and his body sickens from it, with a sickness like mine.
His body sickening just like my malady,
وَكانَand he was بَخيلاًmiserly بِالوِصالِwith union فَحُبُّهُso his beloved
غَداbecame باخِلاًmiserly حَتّىeven بِطَيفِwith a phantom of مَنامِsleep
He was miserly with union; now his beloved
Once sparing of union, his love now
has grown miserly even with a phantom in dreams.
Has grown sparing even of dreams of me,
وَعُلِّقتهُand I became enamored of him رِيماًa white gazelle وَعُلِّقَand he became enamored of آخَراanother
هَوىhe loved آخَراًanother يَهذِيhe raves بِبَدرِof a full moon تمامِfullness
I loved him, a white gazelle; he loved another,
I left him pining, and another has pined
who loved another, who raved of a moon at its fullness;
For another, raving for one in full bloom,
وَعلّقَand he became enamored of أُخرىanother woman حَبَّهاhe loved her آخَرٌanother man هَوىhe loved
أُخيرىyet another woman غَدَتshe became تَهذِيshe raves بآخرَabout another رامِarcher
and he loved another woman, whom another loved, who loved
And another her love has pined for another,
yet another woman, who came to rave of another archer.
Who's raved for yet one more in revel and gloom,
فَياso, oh لَكَfor you مِنof حُبٍّlove تَسَلسَلَformed a chain كُلُّناall of us
حَليفُa companion of أَسىًsorrow هامِيstreaming المَدامِعِtear ducts دامِbleeding
Oh, what a love, linked in a chain! Each of us
Oh, what an interlinked chain of love we are,
is sorrow's companion, his eyes streaming, bleeding.
Allies of sorrow, my tears flowing as I pine,
أَقَمناwe dwelt بِكَهفِin the cave of الحُبِّlove عِدَّةُa number of صُحبَةٍcompanions
وَأَوَّلُناand the first of us بِالبابِat the door شَرُthe worst مُقامِlodging
We dwelt in love's cave, a band of companions,
We dwelt in love's cave, boon companions for years,
and the first of us, at the door, had the worst lodging.
I by the door, with the worst place to pine,
تصَعّدُrise أَنفاسُbreaths المُحبينthe lovers فيin الهَوىpassion
إِلَيهِtoward him فَيَبقىso he remains فيin أَليمِagonizing أوامِburning thirst
The lovers' sighs rise in their passion
The breaths of lovers rise up to it in passion,
toward him, so he remains in agonizing thirst.
Remaining in painful, ceaseless pant and pine,
فَياso, oh لَيتَwould that أَنّاthat we قَدalready جُمِعناwe were brought together فَنَشتَكيso we might lament
اليمَthe anguish of الهَوىlove أَوor نَشتَفيwe find relief بِكَلامِthrough words
Oh, would that we had been brought together, to lament
Would that we gathered to speak of love's agony,
love's anguish, or find relief in words.
Or gain solace, conversing line after line,
كَفاناit suffices us وِصالاًas union أَنthat يُكَلِّمَshould speak بَعضُناsome of us
لِبَعضٍto others وَلَوand even if كَلماwords برجعِwith the return of سَلامِa greeting
It would suffice us for union if some of us spoke
Enough union for us to talk together,
to others, even a few words in reply to a greeting.
Even if just to exchange greetings benign!
