A paradise fashioned for what the soul desires

and what delights the discerning beholder's eyes.

Its floor is marble and pearl-shells,

which they brought from the seas' jutting outcrops.

Its ceiling they flooded with pure gold,

and its walls they clad in silk.

Then its doors are inlaid with

    ivory, ebony, and crystal.

    Rivers of wine replaced water,

and male houris replaced female houris:

young men with down on their cheeks, and beardless youths,

adept at repose upon the bed,

with girdles of gold that they adorned

with pearls swaying above their waists.

So youths go round to them within it,

    with pitchers of aged wines—

young descendants of Japheth, father of the Turks,

fashioned in the loveliest of forms.

    لَبِسوا في الوَغى جُلودَ النُمورِ

    Figures like suns, gleaming with light;

in battle they wore leopard skins.

So in combat they are lion cubs,

and in bed they are the likenesses of houris.

Non-Arabs, like wild beasts by nature,

tamed by the gentle arts of handling,

and by passage from a merchant to a lord,

    in luxury, fresh bloom, and joy;

with heavy-lidded eyes that captivated, and noses

    snub, and faces like full moons;

and tresses that, when they braided them,

were like a serpent coming to the pool.

Then, when they unbound their hair, veiled were

the faces of the full moons in pitch darkness.

What faith remains for one who has become enthralled

by strong wine and the guileless gazelle,

and lips pressing together in sipping kisses,

    and chests rubbing upon chests,

and meeting with a firm-breasted maiden,

and listening to the oud and the tanbur?

This is the life of kings; so whoever is

deprived of this lives in hardship.
