كَريمٌa generous man يُحاكيrivals البَحرَthe sea جودُthe generosity of بنانِهِhis fingers
عَلىthough أَنَّهُhe is أَحلىsweeter مِنthan الشَهدِhoney للنَفسِto the soul
A generous man, whose fingers’ bounty rivals the sea,
Generous, his kindness rivals the sea,
Yet he is sweeter to the soul than honey.
Its honey is sweeter than nectar to the soul.
وَمَنبعُand a wellspring of آدابٍliterary arts تَحلّىhe adorned himself بِحَملِهاby bearing them
فَيُزريso he puts to shame بِسحبانSahban وَيربيand he excels عَلىbeyond قسِّQuss
And a wellspring of literary arts, adorned by possessing them,
The wellspring of manners adorned with its burden,
So he puts Sahban to shame and surpasses Quss.
He nurtures with Suhban, and nurtures the needy.
مَواهِبُهُhis gifts دَرٌflowing milk عَلىfor كُلِّevery مُعتَفٍseeker of bounty
وَأَلفاظُهُand his words دُرٌّpearls عَلىupon صَفحَةِthe surface of الطِرسِthe parchment
His gifts are flowing milk for every suppliant,
His gifts are pearls to every petitioner,
And his words are pearls upon the parchment’s surface.
And his words are pearls on pages white.
يَرىhe considers بَذلَgiving آلافٍthousands قَليلاًlittle وَغَيرُهُwhile another
يَرىhe sees الغايةَthe limit القُصوىthe utmost إِذاwhen جاءَhe comes بِالفَلسِwith a copper coin
He deems giving thousands a trifle, while another
He sees the gift of thousands as paltry, while others
Thinks he has reached the utmost when he brings a copper coin.
See the far goal when they possess a cent.
