ظَبيٌa gazelle تَقنَّصتهI captured him لَيلاًat night فَنادَمَنيthen he drank with me
أُقسِّمُI divide اللَحظَthe gaze بَينَbetween البَدرِthe full moon وَالغُصُنِand the bough
A gazelle I captured at night then drank with me.
A gazelle whose form the night concealed reproached me,
I divide my gaze between the full moon and the bough.
I share the moment between the full moon and the branch.
بَدرٌa full moon أَضاءَshone لَناfor us فيamid شِبهِthe likeness of وَفرتِهِhis locks
حَتّىuntil بَداappeared الصُبحُthe dawn مثلlike الصارِمِthe keen sword اليَمَنيYemeni
A full moon shone for us amid what resembled his locks,
The full moon illuminated for us in its waning
Until dawn appeared like a keen Yemeni sword.
Until dawn emerged like the Yemeni sword.
كَأَنَّماas though الليلُthe night حُبشانٌAbyssinians قَدalready اِنهَزَمواthey were routed
وَالصُبحand the dawn فيin إِثرِهِits wake سَيفُSayf ('sword') ابنson of ذيDhi ('possessor of') يزنِYazan
As though the night were Abyssinians already routed,
It was as if the night were Abyssinians who had been defeated
And dawn, in its wake, was Sayf ibn Dhi Yazan.
And the dawn in its wake the sword of Ibn Dhi Yazan.
ياO صُبحُdawn فَرَّقتَyou scattered شَملاًa gathering كانَhad been مجتمعاًunited
ياO صُبحُdawn فرَّقتَyou separated بَينَbetween الروحِthe soul وَالبَدَنِand the body
O dawn, you scattered a gathering once united.
O dawn, you have separated a group that was united,
O dawn, you separated the soul from the body.
O dawn, you have separated the soul and the body.
