بَدرُ تَمٍّ لَهُ عَلى الخَد خالٌ
فيin اِحمرارredness يَنشَقُّbursts open مِنهُfrom it الشَقيقthe anemone
في اِحمرار يَنشَقُّ مِنهُ الشَقيق
A full moon, with a mole upon his cheek,
A full moon that has a mole on its cheek
Amid a blush from which the anemone bursts open.
In redness that splits from it blood
كتبwrote الحُسنbeauty بِالمحققin muḥaqqaq script مَعناmeaning
كتب الحُسن بِالمحقق مَعنا
هُhis وَلَكنand yet عِذارَهhis cheek-down تَعليقُtaʿlīq script
هُ وَلَكن عِذارَه تَعليقُ
Beauty inscribed his essence in muḥaqqaq script,
Beauty wrote definitely meaning
Yet his cheek-down is taʿlīq.
It is he, but his excuse is suspended
