وِداديmy love صَحيحٌsound لَمnot تَشُنهُmar it النَقائصُflaws
وَحَظّيand my lot عَلىdespite فَرطِthe abundance of المَحَبَّةِlove ناقِصُdeficient
My love is sound, unmarred by flaws;
yet my lot, despite love's abundance, is scant.
وَلَوand if رامَsought عَذليto reproach me منsomeone who يُرينيshows me نَصيحَةًcounsel
رَدَدتُI would send back عذوليmy reproacher وَهوَwhile he is خزيانُashamed ناكِصُretreating
And should one who offers me counsel seek to chide me,
I would send my reproacher back, ashamed and retreating.
وَعلّقتُهand I loved him تركيTurkish أَصلٍin ancestry وَمُقلَةٍand in eye
لَهُhe has نَسَبٌlineage فيin آلِthe house of خاقانKhaqan خالِصُpure
And I fell in love with him, Turkish in ancestry and eye;
his lineage in the house of Khaqan is pure.
رَباgrew up وَهوَwhile he was ظَبيٌa gazelle بَينَamong أُسدٍlions وَغِزلةٍand gazelles
قسيُّhard فَؤادٍof heart نافرُskittish الطَبعِby nature نائِصُevasive
He grew up a gazelle among lions and gazelles,
hard of heart, skittish by nature, evasive.
وَعَهديand my experience بِغزلانِof the gazelles الفَلاof the wilderness يَقنِصونهاthey hunt them
وَهَذاand this غَزالٌa gazelle لِلضَراغيمِof lions قانِصُa hunter
I have known the gazelles of the wilderness to be hunted,
yet this gazelle is a hunter of lions.
خَصائصُgraces حُسنٍof beauty زَيَّنتهاadorned them صِفاتُهُhis attributes
وَغَيرُand anyone other than حَبيبيmy beloved زََيَّنتهُadorned him الخَصائِصُthe graces
Beauty's graces are adorned by his attributes,
while everyone but my beloved is adorned by those graces.
مُحجَّبُveiled حُسنٍbeauty لاnever يَزالceases يَصونُهto guard him
رَقيبٌa watchman عَلىon حِفظٍsafekeeping لَهُfor him الدَهرforever حارِصُintent
His beauty is veiled; he is ceaselessly guarded
by a watchman, forever intent on guarding him.
فَلاso no وَصلَunion إِلاexcept بِاختِلاسَةِthrough a stolen glance ناظِرٍof a beholder
إِلَيهِtoward him لَهُhe has طَرفٌan eye إِذاwhenever لاحَhe appears شاخِصُstaring fixedly
So there is no union save a beholder's stolen glance
toward him—the beholder's eye transfixed whenever he appears.
وَهاand behold هُوَhe ذاthis one عَنfrom طَرفِيَmy sight الشَهرَfor a month غائِبٌabsent
وَهاand behold أَناI ذاthis one عَنfor حَتفيَmy death اليَومَtoday فاحِصُsearching
And now he has been absent from my sight a month,
and here I am today, searching for my death.
فَقَلبيَso my heart فيin نارٍa fire مِنof الوَجدِlonging خالِدٌabiding forever
وَطَرفيَand my eye فيin بَحرٍa sea مِنof الدَمعِtears غائِصُplunging
So my heart dwells forever in a fire of longing,
and my eye plunges into a sea of tears.
