يا نَفسُ مالَك تَهوَينَ الإِقامة في
أَرضٍa land تَعَذَّرَhas proved unattainable كُلٌّevery one مِنof مناكِyour wishes بِهاin it
أَرضٍ تَعَذَّرَ كُلٌّ مِن مناكِ بِها
O soul, why do you love to dwell in
O soul, why do you yearn to remain in
a land where all your wishes have proved unattainable?
A land where everything you wish is difficult?
أَماhave … not? تَلوتِyou recited وَعَجزُand helplessness المَرءِa person's منقصةٌa shortcoming
أَما تَلوتِ وَعَجزُ المَرءِ منقصةٌ
فيin محكمthe clear text of الوَحيrevelation فامشواso walk فيthrough مَناكِبهاits slopes
في محكم الوَحي فامشوا في مَناكِبها
Have you not recited—and a person's helplessness is a failing—
Have you not recited, 'Man's weakness is a flaw?'
in revelation's clear text: “So walk through its slopes”?
So walk in its plains, as you have been commanded.
