Say to the one I love, despite his desertion:

Not for an hour has my heart been free of love for you.

An image has been engraved in my heart's core:

an image of your beauty, not of anyone else's.

And if my eye agrees with my heart

in seeing you, both will find relief from your absence.

O my master, why this estrangement, and who

is this who has turned you away from visiting me?

An absorbing occupation has kept you away from me,

and I have realized what has kept you away.

You are engrossed in the guileless gazelle whom

you have lived beside; his beauty has captured you.

Love's fire was kindled in your heart

by his fleshy-lidded eye, which revealed your anguish.

And from the languor of his eyelids has spread

to you a sickness whose cure eludes you.

And love's fire has seared my heart

because of you; so taste a fire with which he has seared you.

O constant deserter, will you not console

a lovesick man by sending him a tooth-cleaning stick—

an arak twig, a good omen that

I shall see you united with me in the love I bear you?

And O release of the heart from loving him,

begone, for my heart has never sought you.

And O my heart, never cease your lovesick wandering

in love for him until you reach your final resting place.

You have been tormented by love, so passion has become

your sustenance, until you care nothing for your hunger.

And you have folded love away; no one has known it

except the one who has wasted you away through your love for him.

You have shriveled, O my body, from wasting, so

you have become a phantom, too emaciated to be seen.

Do not complain of weakness, for I am a man

who knows you are hardy and your strength mighty.

And O my tale naming my love, would that you had never

existed, nor the one who has recounted you!
