And a creature of strange shape, native to Egypt,

is found in no land other than Egypt.

It is the ravening beast in the Nile of Upper Egypt,

pouncing on whoever comes to the Nile for water.

It snatches him as the eagle snatches its prey,

and tears him apart, limb by limb, and gulps him down.

Among the Nile's creatures, none has a foreleg

and a hindleg but this one, which climbs onto land.

Sometimes it encounters a beast of prey on land,

and runs like a swift steed, or faster still.

It has a long, trailing tail, which it raises,

coiling it round whoever among men is to be lost.

Its teeth are set, female upon male,

to crush bones, seeking out the hard ones among them.

It digs in sand and buries its eggs,

tending them every other day until they hatch.

Swords have no effect on it, as though

upon its hide lay riveted armor plates of its own.

But beneath its armpit is a patch of tender skin,

and through it death climbs up to reach it.

    وَلَكن إِلى حُلقومِهِ يَتَرَدَّدُ

    It has no anus through which to expel its dung;

instead, the dung returns to its gullet.

So it opens its mouth, and then a bird enters,

and spits out what had grown worm-ridden inside.

If it tries to close its jaws upon the bird, then

the feathers pierce the roof of its throat and draw blood.

The buffalo kills it, so when it becomes aware

of one, it flees, hard-pressed as it swims.

Man tricks it until he catches it,

and ties it with rope, as a she-goat is fettered.

We saw it carried on a camel, with

both ends reaching the ground and cutting furrows in it.

Reason has a craft for catching crocodiles,

which sound thought devises, and which earns praise.

The man of reason is subject to power, yet powerful

over every living soul, watchful and strengthened.

No bird in the sky, no wild beast in the wilderness,

nor any blood-shedding creature lies beyond his reach.

    وَفي آخرٍ ذو العَقلِ في الرَمسِ يُلحَدُ

    He subdues them through killing, slaughter, and service;

yet in the end the man of reason is laid in the grave.
