O slender dune-born bough, with a moon above it,
O bough of a sand dune, with a moon above it,
when shall I see you bend toward your yearning lover?
When shall I see you turn toward the yearning lover?

أَذابَهُmelted him away المُقلِقانِthe two tormentors السُهدُsleeplessness وَالدنفُand wasting sickness
O peerless one in beauty, is there anyone to aid a youth
O peerless one in beauty, is there a helper for a youth
melted away by those two tormentors: sleeplessness and lovesick wasting?
Whom the two tormentors—sleeplessness and wasting sickness—have melted away?
سَباهُtook him captive مِنكَfrom you عِذارٌcheek-down أَخضرٌgreen فَصَباso he fell in love

The tender green down upon your cheek enthralled him, and he fell in love;
The green down on your cheek took him captive, and so he fell in love;
and those two seducers—coquettish grace and slenderness—roused his passion.
And the two tempters—coy charm and a slender waist—stirred him.

Enslaved by love, he has never ceased to be infatuated with beauty;
Enslaved by love, he has never ceased to be enthralled by beauty;
those two sorcerers—languorous charm and luxuriant lashes—struck him down.
The two sorcerers—coquetry and luxuriant lashes—have struck him.
ياO عاذِليmy reproacher كُفَّdesist عَنّيfrom me أَوor فَزِدthen increase عَذلاًreproach
إِنيindeed, I فُتِنتُwas bewitched بِمَنby one who فيin وَجهِهِhis face كَلَفُdark spots
O you who reproach me, leave me be—or heap still more blame upon me!
O my reproacher, leave me be, or else heap on more reproach;
For I am bewitched by one whose face is flecked with beauty marks.
Indeed, I have been bewitched by one whose face bears dark spots.
الوَجهُthe face مَعwith مُهجَتيmy heart إِذwhen بانَhe departed مُتَّفِقٌin accord
وَالنَومُand sleep معwith مُقلَتيmy eye مُذsince غابَhe vanished مُختَلِفُat odds
His face and my soul, when he departed, were of one accord:
His face was in accord with my heart when he departed;
but sleep and my eyes, since he vanished, have gone their separate ways.
And sleep has been at odds with my eye since he vanished.
