وَقالواand they said أَبوAbu (father of) حَيانَHayyan قَدalready نالَattained رُتبَةًa rank
وَقالوا أَبو حَيانَ قَد نالَ رُتبَةً
سَيركبُhe will ride فيهاin it بَغلَةًa she-mule وَيَزيدُand gain more
سَيركبُ فيها بَغلَةً وَيَزيدُ
They said, “Abu Hayyan has now attained a rank—
And they said: Abu Hayyan has attained a rank;
They said Abu Hayyan has attained a rank
in it he will ride a mule and rise still higher.”
In it he will ride a she-mule and gain still more.
In which he will ride a mule and excel
وَماand not كُنتُI was أَزهىprouder بِالَّذيfor what صِرتI became نائِلاًattaining
وَما كُنتُ أَزهى بِالَّذي صِرت نائِلاً
وَلاand not أَناI مِمَّنamong those who بالبغالِthrough mules يَسودُgains eminence
وَلا أَنا مِمَّن بالبغالِ يَسودُ
Yet I took no pride in what I had come to attain,
Yet I was no prouder for what I came to attain,
Yet I was not made arrogant by what I attained
nor am I one of those whom mules make a lord.
Nor am I one who gains eminence through mules.
Nor am I one who lords over mules
