أَياO مَنone who سَماrose high فيamong الوَرىmankind قَدرُهُhis standing
وَعمَّand encompassed الأَنامَall people بِمَعروفهِwith his kindness
O you whose standing has risen among mankind,
and whose kindness has reached all people:
لِسانيَmy tongue بِالشُكرِwith thanks مُنطلِقٌunrestrained
فَلِمso why لاnot تجودُdo you give generously بِتصحيفِهِwith its dot-altered form
My tongue is unrestrained in thanks;
so why not bestow its dot-altered form—“sugar”?
أَرىI see اسميmy name تنكَّرbecame unrecognized عِندَكُمُamong you
وَفازَand won اسمُthe name غَيريsomeone other than me بِتَعريفِهِthrough its recognition
I see my name has become unknown among you,
while another's name has won recognition.
أَناI عَلَمٌa proper name فيهِin it زائِدتانِtwo added letters
فَالصَرفُso declension يَقضيrequires بِتَحريفِهِthat it be altered
I am a proper name with two added letters;
so declension demands its alteration.
وَصَعبٌand difficult عَلىfor مَنone who لَهُhe has عادَةٌa habit
وَيَألَفُهاand is accustomed to it تركُabandoning مألوفِهِwhat is familiar to him
And it is hard for one who has a habit
and is accustomed to it to abandon what is familiar to him.
وَمَنand whoever مَرَّpassed يَوماًone day عَلىthrough ذكركمyour remembrance
فذكرُكthen your remembrance يَقضيrequires بِتَشرِيفِهِthat he be honored
And whoever one day crosses your mind,
then your remembrance calls for his being honored.
