I see every poor, lowly man, once he comes into possessions,
I see every lowly pauper, when he acquires wealth,
put on airs over his clothing and splendid mule;
Grow self-important through his clothing and a fine mule.

he thinks he has grown great in the eyes of humankind—
He thinks he has grown great in the eyes of humankind,
yet he is only a mule, made grand by its saddlecloth.
Yet he is only a mule made grand by its saddlecloth.
