وَعُلِّقتُهُand I fell in love with him وَالسَيفُand the sword بَينيbetween me وَبَينَهُand between him

And I fell in love with him, a sword between me and him—
I hung it up, and the sword was between me and it,
a gazelle, yet a slayer of lions.
A gazelle, yet a slayer of the mighty.

From among the Turks: as for his beauty, it is bewitching,
Of the Turks - either its beauty allures,
and as for his onslaught, it is the deadly assault of mighty lions.
Or its blade fells the bold warriors.
غَيورٌjealously protective عَلىof الحُسنِthe beauty الَّذيthat هُوَit is حُسنُهُhis beauty

He jealously guards the beauty that is his own,
Zealous over the beauty that is its beauty,
as though he felt the passion of a constant lover.
As if the passionate lover were attached to it.
فَياso, oh لَيتَif only شِعريmy knowledge كَيفَhow حالةُthe state of عاشِقٍa lover

Oh, if only I knew the plight of a lover
Oh, how I wonder, what is the state of a lover
who cast himself into immense, deadly perils.
Who threw himself into perilous predicaments?
فَلاso no وَصلَunion إِلاexcept باختلاسَةِthrough a stolen glance ناظِرٍof an eye

There is no union save through an eye's stolen glance,
No union except through the stolen glance
when he is off guard and unaware.
Of an onlooker during an inattentive moment unknown to him.

And if he knew who was gazing
If only he knew, the one looking upon
at his beauty, he would repay him by wrenching windpipes.
His beauty would be met with dragging shackles.

I shall endure until death comes or he is seen
I will be patient, or death will come, or it will be seen
softening toward a lovesick man, senseless and distraught.
To bend to a melting, wandering, crazed love.
وَعَزَّيتُand I consoled نَفسيmy soul أَنَّهُthat it سَوفَwill يَنقَضيcome to an end

And I consoled my soul that there would come an end
And I consoled myself that it will soon dissipate
to its passion, and that it would forget as beasts forget.
Her passion, and she will take on the ways of beasts.
فَكُلُّfor every جَمالٍbeauty للزَوالِto disappearance مآلُهُits final fate
وَكُلُّand every ظَلومٍcruel oppressor سَوفَwill يُبلىbe afflicted بِظالِمِby an oppressor
For all beauty is destined to vanish,
For every beauty, its fate is to wither,
and every cruel oppressor will be afflicted by an oppressor.
And every darkness will fade under the light.
سَيظلِمُهُwill oppress him شَعرٌhair يَحلُّsettles بِخَدِّهِon his cheek

Hair will oppress him, settling on his cheek
Hair will soon cloud over his cheek
soon, so he will remain in the blackness of wrongs.
And he will remain in the darkness of adversities.
