مَنَحتُكَI gave you أَشرفَthe noblest ماwhat يُمنَعُis withheld
وَسَلتُكَand I asked you أَيسرَthe simplest ماwhat يُقنعُsatisfies
I gave you the noblest thing one withholds,
I have granted you the noblest gifts denied
And asked you for the simplest thing that satisfies.
And asked of you the easiest things to provide
وَإِنَّand indeed الجَوابَthe answer بلاwith 'no' مؤيسيmakes me despair
وَلَفظand the word نَعَمyes فيهِin it ليfor me مَطمَعُhope
And indeed, an answer of 'no' makes me despair,
Yet your reply leaves me in despair
And in the word 'yes' lies hope for me.
While "yes" from you would let hope there reside
فَانعِمso be gracious بلاwith 'no' أَوor نَعَمyes سيّديmy lord
لِيَسكُنَso that he may grow calm صبٌّa lovesick lover لِماat what يَسمَعُhe hears
So grant me a 'no' or a 'yes,' my lord,
So grant me yes or no, my master
So that a lovesick lover may grow calm at what he hears:
That this longing may find peace inside
فَإِماthen either سُلُوٌّrelease from love مُريحٌrest-giving لَهُfor him
وَإِماor else هَوىًlove مُؤلِمٌpainful مُوجِعُagonizing
Then either release from love, bringing him rest,
Be it sweet relief or painful yearning
Or love that pains and torments,
Tormenting me, my heart rapt and tied
وَصَبرٌand patience إِلىuntil أَنthat يَذوقَhe tastes الرَدىdeath
وَيُجزىand is repaid الحَبيبُthe beloved بِماfor what يَصنَعُhe does
And patience until he tastes death,
I'll wait until fate brings what's deserved
And the beloved is repaid for what he does.
And my love gets what he's bound to derive
