O son of the noble, O Walid, are you not

people of ancient wealth and noble stock?

I have come to you from Shara’ and Bishah,

and from al-Aqiq, and from the south of Muhajjar.

A she-camel with strength in reserve speeds me across the wastes,

after exhaustion, even after her mighty frame is worn down.

Spring lavished its bounty on her at Fayd, and she was turned loose

in a remote, flowering pasture, alive with humming flies.

At first, a tightly gathered remnant

lay upon her backbone, like a maiden's curtained chamber,

until, when she had shed a thick mass of loose hair

from herself, and had gone three months without drinking,

she moved off from Zarud at evening, jolting along, and dawn found her

in the valley of Dhu Qinnah, her lip quivering.

I burdened her with my saddle to reach you; she only

hopes for extra gifts from your ever-ready bounty.

    She passed al-Muqatil's palace after

her noon-hour drew near, though she had not yet reached noon.

Then she veered away from it, as though at her flank

a cat were gripping her upper foreleg with its claws.

And she came past al-Bardan, self-assured,

swift of forelegs; whenever I checked her, she pranced,

until she reached you, having cast forth her yearning cry,

and walked on the red fleshy pads of her forefeet.

She had wasted away; whenever her saddle was removed,

she was left shying from a one-eyed crow.

    وصفَتْ يداهُ بنائلٍ لمْ يَنزُرِ

    Indeed, al-Walid raced against hundreds, outstripping them;

his hands were known for bounty that was never scant.

And hands pointed to him for his forbearance

and resolve, when he could bear a waistcloth.

When at last he donned the cloak, there parted

the circles of the assemblies before a radiant, renowned figure.

He gave lavishly and became a leader when there had passed

seven years, while some of his peers had not yet shed their milk teeth.

And morning and evening he attended to affairs with his resolve,

and with the judgment of a dauntless bearer of blood-money obligations.
