My two eyes pour freely for you, remembering what has passed,

When dry eyes begrudge their tears.

Both devoted, they stream from love’s choking pangs,

As a cloud-fragment poured down, hidden by rainless clouds.

The doves’ lament stirs longing in me,

And the lament of keening women whom funerals have grieved,

At the parting of dear companions whose eyes were like

The eyes of oryxes, borne away across stony tracts.

Those, after coming together through love—

Their union broke apart, and so they parted.

They left a burning ache in my heart when they drew away,

That would not fade, even as wounds faded.
