ترحل بالشباب الشيب عنا

فليت الشيب كان به الرحيل

فليت الشيب كان به الرحيل

Gray hair carried youth away from us.

Youth departs from us,

If only gray hair had been the one to depart!

would that old age would depart!

وقد كان الشباب لنا خليلا

وقد كان الشباب لنا خليلا

فقد قضى مآربه الخليل

فقد قضى مآربه الخليل

And youth had been a close friend to us;

For youth was a companion to us,

So that friend has fulfilled his wishes.

but it has fulfilled its purpose.

لعمر أبي الشباب لقد تولى

لعمر أبي الشباب لقد تولى

حميدا ما يراد به بديل

حميدا ما يراد به بديل

By my father's life, youth has indeed departed,

By the life of youth! It has assumed

Esteemed, with no substitute desired in its place,

the role of one praised, without equal.

إذ الأيام مقبلة علينا

إذ الأيام مقبلة علينا

وظل أراكة الدنيا ظليل

وظل أراكة الدنيا ظليل

When the days were turning toward us,

As the days advance upon us

And the shade of the world's arak tree was deep.

and the shade of this world is paltry.
