أخو الشيب لا يدنو إلى الحور بالهوى
ليقربto draw closer أنbecause ازدادhe increased فيin قربnearness بعداin distance
ليقرب أن ازداد في قرب بعدا
The gray-haired man does not approach the dark-eyed beauties in love
To draw closer, for nearness has made him more distant.
يعاطينهthey offer him كأسthe cup of السلوforgetfulness عنfrom الهوىlove
يعاطينه كأس السلو عن الهوى
ويمنعنهand they deny him وصلاintimacy يعاطينهthey offer it المرداthe beardless youths
ويمنعنه وصلا يعاطينه المردا
They offer him the cup of forgetting love,
And deny him the intimacy they offer the beardless youths.
