Have the traces of the long-abandoned dwelling made you weep,

at Amras, deserted by the encamping clans?

And every overhanging cloud swept across it, night and day,

raging, with a surge that rose above the mounds,

to the far side of Shams; the east wind's course left nothing,

nor the crash of roaring, battering floodwater,

    except a swing, a children's play-place,

on level ground among those gullies,

and worn remnants of rains that visited a spring camp in turn,

upon them were the fairest singing serving-maids.

They covered the earth's skin until they changed it,

short of the deluging, ravaging storms.

So you see a fragment of them, laboriously revealed

to you by the faded signs of the ruins,

as the two hands of a Bariqi woman struck a tattoo

in Najran, fixing it on the backs of wrists.

She left it raw, not fully worked; so you see upon her

scabs that grew from them, below the knuckles,

up to arms that they tattooed, as though

fine spray from folded, drizzling clouds had covered them.

Then your eyes flowed over it when you recognized it,

with a rushing, streaming chain of paired pearls:

streams of tears and overflowing lids, as though

they poured from the spouts of worn, split waterskins,

because you recognized the campsite where the staff was split

by parting, with a rift that cannot be mended.

And I had known that parting had a cry

over the tribe, on a day cruel to your soul,

like its cry on the day of al-Liwa, when there appeared

at the foot of Dhu Bayd the wild cows of the sand tracts.

They donned patterned striped cloth, then walked in it,

    slim-waisted, full-bodied, broad of haunch.

Each evening they comb with Dari perfume

and black combs every dusky, coal-black head of hair.

When they let their words fall to the young man,

like coral beads dropping from a stringer's palm,

they shot and pierced hearts, yet you see

no coursing blood—only burning anguish in the breasts.

The tale-bearers told you that I do not love you.

Indeed I do—by God's veils, endowed with sanctity!

I turn away; but the estrangement you suppose to be

comfort for us is nothing but swallowing bitter colocynth,

out of modesty and care lest gossip spread

about us and you—fie upon the tale-bearers!

Indeed, had it been anyone but you, they would have sped

toward him—the spears with honed, cleaving points.

Yet, by God's House, nothing has left a Muslim's blood unavenged

like those with white front teeth and radiant mouths.

Whenever Alaqa' appeared one day, or

Abu Taw'am appeared, or you glimpsed Ibn Asim's monastery—

huge, sturdy birds, smeared as with tar and stoutly built,

with thick-set bones—the bones of their skulls—

trilling from speckled necks whenever they lowered them

and cooed, their ample gullets holding the sound—

you wept and scattered tears in yearning

and longing; this does not fulfill a lovesick man's desire.

As though I had not tormented the jealous man and battled

with languid glances from the healthy yet ailing,

nor dallied with the full-bodied youth, whose

braids were never denied the musk of perfume caravans,

when pleasure lured me, and when I courted it

with pitch-black hair at both temples and thick forelocks,

and when I followed every one drawn

toward pleasure, sworn to idle follies, sinful,

    hard on riding-beasts, a squanderer; yet I

do not regret the loss of what I squandered.

I deem the lowlier of my two days the better; even if

baseness carries me too far, I heed no fault-finder's blame.

For you have caused bloodshed—if you only knew—

against the tribe; one who does the like does not escape unharmed.
