إلا ربما يعتادك الشوق بالحزن
You were moved, and the dwellings at Jafn stirred you.
The homes have been stirred and aroused for you from an eyelid
Yet longing sometimes revisits you with sorrow.
Except perhaps longing has accustomed you to sorrow

نظرتُ إلى أظعان زينبَ بالضحى

فأعولتها لو أنَّ إعوالها يغني
I looked at Zaynab's camel litters in the forenoon.
I looked upon the wrists of Zainab in the morning
So I lamented them—if only lamenting them could avail.
I wailed for her if only wailing for her would avail
فوso, by اللَهGod لاnot أنساكِI forget you زينبُZaynab ماas long as دعتcalls
فو اللَه لا أنساكِ زينبُ ما دعت

So, by God, I shall not forget you, Zaynab, as long as
By God, I will not forget you Zainab whenever
a ring-necked, ash-gray dove calls mournfully on a branch.
A ringdove calls, grieving upon a branch
