إذاif أنتَyou رافقتَyou accompany الحُتاتَal-Ḥutāt بنson of جابرJābir
فقلْthen say فيabout رفيقٍa companion غائبٍabsent وهْوَwhile he is شاهِدُpresent
If you accompany al-Ḥutāt ibn Jābir,
If you accompany the lost Hutaib bin Jabir
then speak of a companion absent though he is present:
Say to the absent yet present companion:
أصمّdeaf إذاwhen ناديتَyou call جَهلاًout of ignorance وإنْand if تَسِرْyou travel
فأعمَىthen blind وإنْand if تَفعلْyou do جميلاًa kindness فجاحِدُthen ungrateful
deaf, through ignorance, when you call; and if you travel,
Deaf if called ignorantly, though you whisper
then blind; and if you do a kindness, then ungrateful.
Blind if done good, ever ungrateful.
أوانيbrought me together وإيَّاهُand him الطَّريقُthe road عشيَّةًone evening
يهابُfears سُراهاits night journey الأحْمَسيُّthe brave man المُعاوِدُthe seasoned one
The road brought me and him together one evening,
Our paths crossed in the eve
whose night journey even the seasoned brave man dreads.
Fearing its perils the persistent coward.
فأُقسمُso I swear بَرّاًtruthfully أنَّthat لولاwere it not for خيالُهُhis figure
لماthen not كنتُI was إلاَّexcept مثلlike منone who هوhe is واحدُalone
So I swear truthfully that, were it not for his figure,
I swear sincerely without his phantom
I would have been just like someone alone.
I'd be just like the lonesome one.
