ظَلَّت تُقابِلُهُ بِوَجهٍ عابِسِ
When she saw the spearpoint's mark on his cheek,
When she saw the mark of his teeth on his cheek,
She kept facing him with a frown.
She kept facing him with a frowning face.
خَلَفَreplaced السِنانُthe spearpoint بِهِon it مَواقِعَthe places of لَثمِهاher kisses
خَلَفَ السِنانُ بِهِ مَواقِعَ لَثمِها
بِئسَhow dreadful الخِلافَةُthe replacement لِلمُحِبِّfor the lover البائِسِhapless
بِئسَ الخِلافَةُ لِلمُحِبِّ البائِسِ
The spearpoint took over the places of her kisses there—
The teeth left in place of her kisses,
What a dreadful replacement for the hapless lover!
What a miserable substitute for the miserable lover.
