مُعاتَبَةُ الكَريمِ عَلى النَوالِ
What folly, among the follies I have seen,
What misguidance I have not seen among misguidance
to reproach the generous man for his giving!
Reproaching the generous for gifts

And my hearing is busy from all blame
are indeed occupied with praise or requests.
With praise or supplication

By Allah, my hand was never stingy
nor have I become the most wretched among you through my wealth.
Nor did I became your adversary with my money

to one little praised and blameworthy in deeds.
Of little praise, blameworthy deed

Treasures of reward or beauty

only the fruits of the tips of tall spears.
Only the fruits of the mountain tops

If no fire touches me, I refuse

We lodged among the tent ropes of our enemies,
Either we bring our tents among the tents of the enemy
in a land devoid of helpers.
To a land cleared of the Christians

We enjoy its cotton and derive benefit from it
and pride keeps us from leaving,
And refusal prevents us from contempt

O Sayf al-Dawla, in whom hope is placed, I
O sword of hoped for rule, I verily
care nothing for the world so long as you live.
From the world, if you live, turn away

And whoever falls into perils, will not deter him
by time's calamities in family and wealth.
The catastrophes of fate in family and wealth

When the pigeons are launched at me one day
then it will be in defense of guidance, at the hand of error.
Then in aiding the truth by the hand of misguidance

If hand and heart do not betray you,
When no hand and heart betray you
then the treachery of nights has no power over you.
Then the treacherous nights are not against you

You are the most courageous of people
and the most steadfast of them through battle's turns,
And the most patient of the ordeals of fighting

The most audacious against a dense army
and the greatest of them in raiding an encamped tribe.
And the deepest in raid on protected souls

You struck, leaving the sword no edge,
You struck and left no edge for the sword
and wheeled where the space was too narrow for movement.
You charged where the plain was too narrow

Then, with death looming, you said, 'Patience!'
So you said, as death cast patience
though patience is costly for anyone but you.
And verily, patience with you is dear

Lo! Is there any denier, O son of my Nizār

Of my stand that day or my words

Did I not stand firm in battle, while the horses were in disarray,
Did I not prove to it as the horses were in tumult
where men's wits grow unsteady?
Where the dreams of men grow fearful

I left the flowing beards in it

Bloodied, broken the high parts

And I returned, dragging my spear from a stand in battle
And I returned, dragging my spear from a position
of which the ladies of curtained chambers speak.
Of which the ladies of the carriages speak

I seek protection for your highness from the evil eye

Verily, you defended the sanctuary of glories

And my colt, in its pride, does not touch the ground,
And my steed's hoof disdains the ground proudly
as though its dust were arrowheads.
As if its soil were the axis of shooting stars

We must face again every day
It is for us to renew every cheap day
on which precious lives are held cheap.
Raids which count to him as grave perils

and if we die, ours are the deaths of men.
And if we die, they are the deaths of men
