الحُرُّthe free, noble man يَصبِرُendures patiently ماas long as أَطاقَhe can muster تَصَبُّراًpatient endurance
فيat كُلِّevery آوِنَةٍoccasion وَكُلِّand every زَمانِtime
The noble man endures as long as he can summon patience,
The free man endures with patience whatever he can
At every moment and at all times.
In every time and era
وَيَرىand he considers مُساعَدَةَhelping الكِرامِthe noble مُروءَةًhonorable conduct
ماسالَمَتهُas long as they leave him in peace نَوائِبُcalamities الحَدَثانِof time
And he deems helping the noble an act of honor,
And sees helping the generous as nobility
So long as the calamities of time leave him in peace.
As long as misfortunes of fate did not harm him
وَيَذوبُand he melts away بِالكِتمانِthrough concealment إِلّاexcept أَنَّهُthat he
أَحوالُهُhis circumstances تُنبيtell عَنِof الكِتمانِthe concealment
And he melts away in concealment, yet
And he melts with keeping silent unless
His condition betrays what he conceals.
His conditions inform against keeping silent
فَإِذاthen when تَكَشَّفَhe is laid bare وَاِضمَحَلَّتand dwindle away حالُهُhis circumstances
أَلفَيتَهُyou find him يَشكوcomplaining بِكُلِّwith every لِسانِtongue
Then, when he is laid bare and his fortunes dwindle,
So when his condition was uncovered and weakened
You find him complaining with every tongue.
You would find him complaining with every tongue
وَإِذاand when نَباproves inhospitable بيto me مَنزِلٌan abode فارَقتُهُI leave it
وَاللَهُand God يَلطُفُis kind بيto me بِكُلِّin every مَكانِplace
And when an abode proves inhospitable to me, I leave it,
And if a house brought me close, I left it
And God is kind to me in every place.
And Allah graces me in every place
