وَيَحولُand turns away عَنfrom شِيَمِthe traits of الكَريمِthe noble man الوافيthe faithful
Others, not I, are changed by harsh conduct,
And turn from the ways of the noble and faithful.
لاnot أَرتَضيI accept وُدّاًaffection إِذاif هُوَit لَمdoes not يَدُمlast
عِندَin the face of الجَفاءِcoldness وَقِلَّةِand a lack of الإِنصافِfairness
I accept no affection if it does not endure
Through coldness and a lack of fairness.
تَعِسَmay he be wretched الحَريصُthe greedy man وَقَلَّand little is ماwhat يَأتيhe comes بِهِwith it
عِوَضاًin return مِنَfor الإِلحاحِinsistence وَالإِلحافِand importunate pleading
Woe to the greedy man! Little does he gain
In return for insistence and importunate pleading.
إِنَّindeed الغَنِيَّthe rich man هُوَhe الغَنِيُّthe rich one بِنَفسِهِwithin himself
وَلَوْand even if أَنَّهُthat he عاريbare المَناكِبِthe shoulders حافِbarefoot
The truly rich man is the one rich within himself,
Even if he is bare-shouldered and barefoot.
ماكُلُّnot all مافَوقَwhat is above البَسيطَةِthe earth كافِياًsufficient
فَإِذاbut if قَنِعتَyou are content فَكُلُّthen every شَيءٍthing كافِis sufficient
Not even all that is on earth is enough;
But if you are content, everything suffices.
وَتَعافُand disdains ليfor me طَمَعَthe greed of الحَريصِthe grasping man أُبُوَّتيmy paternal lineage
وَمُروءَتيand my honor وَقَناعَتيand my contentment وَعَفافيand my self-restraint
My lineage rejects for me the grasping man's greed,
As do my honor, my contentment, and my self-restraint.
ماكَثرَةُnot the abundance الخَيلِof horses الجِيادِfine-bred بِزائِديincreasing me
شَرَفاًin honor وَلاnor عَدَدُthe number السَوامِof grazing livestock الضافيplentiful
A multitude of fine steeds does not raise me
In honor, nor do great numbers of grazing livestock.
خَيليmy horses وَإِنand though قَلَّتthey are few كَثيرٌgreat نَفعُهاtheir usefulness
بَينَamid الصَوارِمِkeen swords وَالقَناand lances الرَعّافِblood-dripping
My horses, though few, render great service
Amid keen swords and blood-dripping lances.
وَمَكارِميand my noble deeds عَدَدُthe number of النُجومِthe stars وَمَنزِليand my home
مَأوىa refuge الكِرامِfor the noble وَمَنزِلُand a lodging الأَضيافِfor guests
My noble deeds are as numerous as the stars, and my home
Is a refuge for the noble and a lodging for guests.
لاnot أَقتَنيI acquire لِصُروفِagainst the reversals of دَهريmy lifetime عُدَّةًprovisions
حَتّىso much so that كَأَنَّas though صُروفُهُits reversals أَحلافيmy allies
I lay up no provisions against my life's reversals,
So much so that its reversals seem my allies.

وَلَقَدand indeed عَرَفتُI knew بِمِثلِهاfor the like of them أَسلافيmy forebears
These are traits I have been known for since I was a youth,
And indeed, I knew my forebears for qualities like these.
