أَتُلزِمُنيdo you impose on me ذَنبَthe guilt of المُسيءِthe offender تَعَجرُفاarrogantly
O wrongdoer who has taken to reproaching a fair man,
O unjust one who reproaches the equitable
do you arrogantly charge me with the offender's guilt?
Do you blame me for the sin of the evildoer arrogantly?

I began to embellish my reproach for fear of
I began by gentling the reproach, fearing
reproach and of being called cold, fearing coldness.
Reproach, and I mentioned estrangement fearing estrangement
أُوافىI am encountered عَلىdespite عُلّاتِthe faults of عَتبِكَyour reproach صابِراًpatient

I am found patient despite the faults of your reproach,
I am patient with the causes of your blame
and I am found fair amid every form of your injustice.
And I am fair with the states of your injustice

بِهِجرانِهِin return for his desertion وَصلاًcloseness وَمِنand in return for غَدرِهِhis betrayal وَفاfidelity
And whenever I was true to a friend, I would grant him
Whenever I reconciled with an intimate who estranged me
closeness for his desertion, and fidelity for his betrayal.
I rewarded his estrangement with connection and his betrayal with loyalty
فَهَيَّجَso stirred بيwithin me هَذاthis الكِتابُletter صَبابَةًardent longing
وَجَدَّدَand renewed ليfor me هَذاthis العِتابُreproach تَأَسُّفاsorrow
So this letter stirred ardent longing within me,
This message stirred up youthfulness in me
and this reproach renewed my sorrow.
And this reproach renewed regret in me
فَإِنso if أَدنَتِbrought near الأَيّامُthe days داراًa dwelling بَعيدَةًdistant
شَفىsoothed القَلبَthe heart مَظلومٌa wronged man مِنَby العَتبِthe reproach فَاِشتَفىand so he found relief
So if the days bring a distant dwelling near,
If days brought a distant abode nearer
one wronged by reproach will soothe his heart and find relief.
The wronged heart is healed by reproach and recovered
فَإِنthen if كُنتُهُI am that one أَقرَرتُI admitted بِالذَنبِto the guilt تائِباًrepentant
وَإِنand if لَمnot أَكُنI was أَمسَكتُI held back عَنهُfrom it تَأَلُّفاseeking affection
Then if I am the one at fault, I will admit my guilt, repentant;
If I acknowledged the sin repentantly
and if I am not, I will hold back from it to foster affection.
Or if I did not, I refrained from it to reconcile
