O wound, the first has not yet healed.

Can my heart, then, bear you both?

    حَيثُ أَصابا فَهُوَ المَقتَلُ

    Two wounds in a body feeble in strength;

Wherever they struck lies the fatal spot.

The days divide our loved ones,

And their share is the best and fairest.

And would that, when they took their share,

They would close their eyes to ours, or overlook it.

In the latter wound, may you be spared their

Unjust turn—what the first made you swallow.

For the captive's ransom is accepted,

But the dead person's ransom is not accepted.

Never lack patience in any circumstance,

For it is indeed the most beautiful trait.

And I lived in honor and in prosperity,

With your fortune youthful and on the rise.
