يا لَيلُ ما أَغفَلُ عَمّا بي
حَبائِبيmy loved ones فيكَwithin you وَأَحبابيand my dear friends
حَبائِبي فيكَ وَأَحبابي
O night, how oblivious to my suffering
O night, how oblivious you are to my plight
are my loved ones and dear friends within you!
My loved ones are in you, and those I yearn for
ياO لَيلُnight نامَslept الناسُthe people عَنheedless of موجَعٍone in pain
يا لَيلُ نامَ الناسُ عَن موجَعٍ
ناءٍfar away عَلىupon مَضجَعِهِhis bed نابيrestless
ناءٍ عَلى مَضجَعِهِ نابي
O night, the people have slept, heedless of one in pain,
O night, people sleep despite their anguish
far away, restless upon his bed.
Tossing and turning on their beds, restless
هَبَّتblew لَهُtoward him ريحٌa wind شَآمِيَّةٌSyrian
هَبَّت لَهُ ريحٌ شَآمِيَّةٌ
مَتَّتwas linked إِلىto القَلبِthe heart بِأَسبابِby bonds
مَتَّت إِلى القَلبِ بِأَسبابِ
A wind from Syria blew his way;
A northern wind blew towards me
it was linked to the heart by bonds.
Reaching my heart with its messages
أَدَّتdelivered رِسالاتِmessages حَبيبٍa beloved لَناto us
أَدَّت رِسالاتِ حَبيبٍ لَنا
فَهِمتُهاI understood them مِنfrom بَينِamong أَصحابيmy companions
فَهِمتُها مِن بَينِ أَصحابي
It delivered messages from a beloved to us;
Bearing news from a beloved of mine
I alone among my companions understood them.
