وَيا عِلمي أَما تَنفَع

وَيا عِلمي أَما تَنفَع

O my heart, will you not grow humble?

Oh my heart, do you not soften,

And O my knowledge, will you not be of use?

And oh my knowledge, do you not benefit,

أَما حَقّي بِأَن أَنظُ

أَما حَقّي بِأَن أَنظُ

رَ لِلدُنيا وَما تَصنَع

رَ لِلدُنيا وَما تَصنَع

Is it not right for me to look

Is it not my right that I look

upon the world and what it does?

At this world and what it does,

أَما شَيَّعتُ أَمثالي

أَما شَيَّعتُ أَمثالي

إِلى ضيقٍ مِنَ المَضجَع

إِلى ضيقٍ مِنَ المَضجَع

Have I not escorted those like me

Have not my peers gone

to a narrow resting place?

To the narrowness of the grave,

أَما أَعلَمُ أَن لا بُد

أَما أَعلَمُ أَن لا بُد

دَ لي مِن ذالِكَ المَصرَع

دَ لي مِن ذالِكَ المَصرَع

Do I not know that there is no escape

Do I not know that there is no escape

for me from that place of death?

For me from that final resting place,

أَيا غَوَثاهُ بِاللا

أَيا غَوَثاهُ بِاللا

هِ هَذا الأَمرُ ما أَفظَع

هِ هَذا الأَمرُ ما أَفظَع

O, help! By God,

Oh helper of Allah, this matter - how grave!

how dreadful this matter is!
